The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said,

“When a person dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).” (Muslim)

We have all lost friends or families over recent years or at least know of people who have lost loved one. This has been a particularly challenging time because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Death is the only thing promised in life. As Muslims, when we lose someone close to us, it is a heart-breaking time as we attach ourselves to all the memories we shared, facing the reality that we will never see them again in this world. We pray Allah (swt) grants them all the highest ranks of Jannah, may He illuminate their graves and grant beautiful patience ‘Sabr Jameel’ to their loved ones. Ameen!

Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji’oon. ”Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we are returning”. [The Noble Qur’an, 2:156]

Whilst we pray Allah (swt) allows us to reunite with our loved ones in the gardens of Jannah, there are two things we can do for them.

The first thing is to make Dua for them. It is our continuous du’a that will help them in the grave, the time between this world and the next.

The second is to give Sadaqah Jariyah on their behalf which guarantees a recurring reward for both the giver and the loved ones equally. This is important because a common misconception is that our own reward will be decreased, so if we give it on behalf of our parents, the reward will be split. In fact, we can give it on behalf of as many many relatives without limit, they each benefit from the full reward.
