Here at ILM, we provide life-saving food packs to economically disadvantaged communities around the world. Whether their hunger is the result of systemic poverty, conflict or natural disaster emergencies, the ILM team is ready to support those who need us the most, when they need us.

With some 690 million people going to sleep hungry every evening around the world, there is much work to be done to eradicate food insecurity and distress. We work tirelessly with our in-country offices to assist those who need us by providing life-saving food packages; however, we can only do so with your help.

World Hunger Facts

Hunger is one of the biggest issues in the world, and despite media discourse, it does not just affect the Global South. Much of our work takes place in the UK. As well as being one of the richest countries in the world, the UK is largely protected from both extreme weather and conflict – two of the leading causes of worldwide hunger. It is one of the world’s biggest economies, and yet food parcel distribution is rising. The UK ranked fourth in terms of hunger in Europe, with 20% of the population living in some form of food insecurity, and that number is increasing.

Outside of the UK, world hunger is also a serious problem. To highlight the severity of the problem, here are some key facts that bolster the need for charities like ILM to continue to work hard and help ease the suffering of millions.

  • Every 13 seconds, a child dies of hunger somewhere in the world
  • 1 in 9 people around the world are classed as undernourished or hungry
  • Globally, a third of women of reproductive age (15-49) have anemia caused by iron deficiencies because of malnutrition
  • 70% of all food is produced by small farmers, fishermen and herders who are especially vulnerable to food insecurity
  • Conflict is the leading cause of hunger – 70% of the top 20 countries facing food insecurity are in a state of conflict
  • 34 million people were pushed into food insecurity because of severe climatic changes
  • The COVID-19 pandemic is projected to increase food insecurity by up to 82%

The UN set out to tackle world hunger, and whilst numbers have fallen since 2000, the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic could derail progress. That is why the work that the international ILM team does is so important. We are there to provide real support to those who need us most in times of crises. Our teams work in areas affected by natural disasters, conflict and systemic poverty, and our efforts have only increased since the pandemic began.

To continue our aid, we need your help.

Where We Work

We rely on donations from supporters so that we can put together comprehensive food packages in hunger-stricken areas. Some of the countries we work in and provide food relief to include:

  • Bangladesh
  • Egypt
  • India
  • Malawi
  • Nepal
  • Pakistan
  • United Kingdom

There are many more communities around the world that need the life-saving provisions included in our food packages. With your donations, we can extend our support to more people and help them elevate themselves out of food poverty.

What is Included in a Food Donation?

The hunger relief packages we provide vary from country to country and pack to pack depending on the resources available and the community we are assisting. As standard, our food packages include provisions such as:

  • Beans
  • Grains
  • Oil
  • Pulses
  • Rice
  • Sugar

There are specific times of the year where we can bolster our parcels, for example, Ramadhan. During the month of fasting, many Muslims seek to give alms and donate their Zakat as per the third pillar of Islam. As a result of the influx of donations, and to help ensure no person loses their life whilst fasting, we boost our food parcels to include warm meals and bottled water.

Qurbani is another time of the year where we can supplement our food packages with meat due to the donations made by our donors around the world. For some of the communities we work with, Qurbani meat is the only meat they will get to eat throughout the year.

Donate a Food Package

Play your part in ending hunger by donating to our Feed the World appeal. Your kind donation will allow us to distribute the life-saving food parcels detailed above.

  • £30 donation – feed one family in a hunger-stricken area
  • £60 donation – feed two families in a hunger-stricken area
  • £150 donation – feed five families in a hunger-stricken area
  • £300 donation – feed 10 families in a hunger-stricken area

You can make a one-off payment, or you can donate monthly. Your donation can be purely charitable, or it can be an act of Zakat or Sadaqah. Whatever you choose to give, know that your generosity could save a life, for which you will be surely rewarded by Allah (SWT).

Why not increase your donation and help even more people by donating to our water appeal? Oftentimes, water distress and food insecurity go hand in hand. You can find out more about our H2Oath water appeal here.
