The Day of Arafah
The Day of Arafah is the greatest day of the entire year. It is the 9th day of Dhul Hijjah and the day on which the pilgrims stand on the plains of Arafah, humbly calling upon Allah. Even for those not performing Hajj, it is a day filled with immense mercy, forgiveness, and opportunity.
The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“There is no day on which Allah frees more people from the Fire than the Day of Arafah.”
— Sahih Muslim
This is a day to reconnect with Allah, seek forgiveness, increase in worship, and fill your tongue and heart with Du’a and Dhikr.
Why Is the Day of Arafah So Special?
The Day of Arafah is:
Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My favour upon you, and approved Islam as your religion.”
— Surah Al-Ma’idah (5:3)
This verse was revealed on the Day of Arafah.
Fast the Day of Arafah
For those not performing Hajj, fasting on this day is highly recommended.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“Fasting the Day of Arafah expiates the sins of the previous year and the coming year.”
— Sahih Muslim
Increase in Du’a
The Day of Arafah is one of the greatest days for making Du’a.
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best Du’a is the Du’a of the Day of Arafah.”
— Jami` at-Tirmidhi
Spend the day asking Allah sincerely for:
Even if you struggle with extra worship, do not miss the fast if you are able.
The Best Dhikr of the Day of Arafah
The Prophet ﷺ said:
“The best of what I and the Prophets before me have said on the Day of Arafah is:
Lā ilāha illa Allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-ḥamd wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr.”
Arabic
لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ، لَهُ الْمُلْكُ وَلَهُ الْحَمْدُ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ قَدِيرٌ
Transliteration
Lā ilāha illa Allāhu waḥdahu lā sharīka lah, lahul-mulk wa lahul-ḥamd wa huwa ‘alā kulli shay’in qadīr.
Translation
“There is no god worthy of worship except Allah alone without partner. To Him belongs all dominion and all praise, and He has power over all things.”
Repeat this abundantly throughout the day.
Recommended Dhikr for the Day
Fill your tongue with:
Send Salawat Upon the Prophet ﷺ
One of the best acts on blessed days is sending peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Salawat
اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَىٰ مُحَمَّدٍ وَعَلَىٰ آلِ مُحَمَّدٍ
Transliteration
Allāhumma ṣalli ‘alā Muḥammad wa ‘alā āli Muḥammad.
Translation
“O Allah, send Your peace and blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.”
Seek Forgiveness Constantly
No matter how great your sins may be, Allah’s mercy is greater.
Repeat often:
Arabic
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللّٰهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ
Transliteration
Astaghfirullāha wa atūbu ilayh.
Translation
“I seek Allah’s forgiveness and repent to Him.”
The Day of Arafah is a day of returning to Allah.
Make a Personal Du’a List
Before the day begins, write down:
Ask Allah with certainty, humility, and hope.
Give Charity
Good deeds on these blessed days are beloved to Allah.
Even a small amount given sincerely can become enormous in reward.
Recite Qur’an
Spend time with the Book of Allah:
Even a few pages with reflection can transform the heart.
Avoid Sins and Distractions
Protect your day from:
Do not allow one of the greatest days of the year to pass in heedlessness.

Final Reminder
The Day of Arafah is not just another Islamic date. It is an opportunity for forgiveness, mercy, transformation, and closeness to Allah.
Many people will leave this day completely forgiven.
Do not let it pass like any ordinary day.
Turn to Allah sincerely.
Remember Him constantly.
Ask Him abundantly.
And hope for His mercy.
