Fitrana: Fulfilling Our Duty to Aid the Needy

Fitrana, or Zakat al-Fitr, is a crucial act of charity ordained upon every Muslim who possesses the means, mandated to be given before the Eid al-Fitr prayer. This charity serves as a purification for the fasting person, cleansing them of any minor sins and misbehavior during the holy month of Ramadan. By contributing Fitrana, Muslims ensure that the less fortunate can also celebrate the joyous occasion of Eid without worry. The amount given should be sufficient to feed one poor person for a day, embodying the spirit of community in Islam. This fulfills a religious obligation, but also fosters a sense of solidarity and support within the community, making Eid a celebration for everyone.

By donating Fidya, you not only fulfill your religious obligation but also help feed the poor and hungry, ensuring that those struggling with food insecurity receive the nourishment they need.

When someone cannot fast in Ramadan (due to ill health, travelling or menstruation for example) they should make up the missed fasts when they are able to do so. However, if they will not be able to make up missed fasts (due to old age or chronic illness that is unlikely to improve) they should pay fidya for someone else to be fed.
