Meet Jameel
Jameel is a young footballer from Gaza. Before the war he played at school, played after school, and played every moment in between. Football was his life.
During the war his leg was severely injured. The damage was so extensive that the tendons and veins in his leg were severed, with only one left intact, and doctors expected that the leg would have to be amputated.
“If anyone blames you, I will take the blame. But I need to keep my leg.”
He refused to lose his leg
Jameel said those words to a paramedic in the back of an ambulance. He was a child, in shock, in pain, and he was clear about one thing: the leg stays.
Miraculously, it did. He now walks in a cast, and when our team asked him when he last played football, we expected him to say back in Gaza. He said earlier that day, outside.
He is doing everything he can to bring the nerves, the veins and the muscle back. He has the resilience of a lion.
What he needs now
The next step is a scan to see whether the nerves and veins are repairing the way they should. After that comes the surgery, and the recovery that follows.
His father is still searching for a surgeon willing to take on the case. Medical care in Egypt is not free for families evacuated from Gaza, so every stage has to be funded.

Why your donation matters
Jameel has already refused to let this injury take his leg. What he cannot do on his own is pay for the treatment that saves it.
Regular monthly donations are what keep this going. Pooled with other donors, £5 a month funds scans, surgery and rehabilitation for young people like Jameel who were evacuated from Gaza to Egypt for medical care.
Any additional donations received for this individual, or funds remaining once his treatment is complete, will be used to support other medical evacuees within the Mercy Shifaa Fund or similar charitable projects at ILM UK's discretion.
